RYUJIN was born in 1979 and graduated from Setsu Mode Seminar Art College. He creates illustration works for books, magazines, and advertisements. His unique style of modern yet handmade atmosphere is produced with the combination of Adobe Illustrator and paints. His works were selected in TIS Competition (2007), chosen for the second place in the 7th "Note-Ten" competition by Illust-Note Magazine (2008), and selected in the first competition by Illustrators Tsushin (2009) as well as in the 3x3 professional show in the US (2010).

I loved mangas and robots in my childhood.
I remember drawing "Gundam" characters on my notebook as I adored them very much, and I also drew pictures of my original robots, because I was pleased to get praised for them.
At that time, I had never thought about my future occupation, and I didn't even have the slightest idea of becoming an illustrator.

After I grew up, I started to learn art at Setsu Mode Seminar. I painted many portraits with watercolours and acrylic paints. Here I developed my artistic skills, not so much through lectures but through presentations and communication with other students, who inspired me very much.
Through the interaction, I was trying to discover my own expression as an artist.

Looking back, I was creating something halfway between "illustration" and "art".
But as I listened to graduates and other students, I began to feel that my style was better suited for the illustration market.
So when I graduated, I started my career as an illustrator.

I have gradually shifted my creative style towards digital illustration from around 2008.
This change was triggered by my curiosity as to what would happen if I reproduced my previous drawings using digital methods instead.
Then I became increasingly attracted by this new expression, which led me to create this award-winning piece of work for this competition.
I mainly used Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.

My first commission work of this new style was something a little complicated --- to introduce the process of making digital illustration to the readers of MdN magazine. Because I had not yet produced so many digital pictures myself, this project of "showing people the way" made me extremely nervous.

In 2010, I held my solo exhibition at "Tambourine Gallery" in Gaien-Mae, Tokyo. That was my first solo exhibition, although I had taken part in various group exhibitions many times before.
Through this experience, I had my illustration seen by many more people, and also gained a sense of responsibility towards my work.
Above anything else, I think I became mentally mature in this short period of 6 days.

Frankly speaking, I was just overwhelmed by winning this competition. When I received the phone call about the result, I felt shiver of joy, as I had never expected the first prize. Even now, I still sense the joy oozing out...
I am certain that I could put all my resources into this award winning work. And what pleases me most is the fact that the expression that I aim has gained the judges' recognition.

In the future, I intend to illustrate literary works such as mysteries, Sci-fi, and hardboiled fictions, which I like very much.
Furthermore, I would like to try illustration for advertisement. It would be flattering to see my work on large posters in many stations and airports.
But for now, I am all too ready to work for varied projects, whenever opportunities arise, as a young illustrator still on the way of developing skills.

My goal is to become a global illustrator working actively in Japan and worldwide. I hope to put numerous ideas and inspirations into my work and produce many pieces of illustration.
