KATOGI started her career as a freelance illustrator in 2005. She has been creating illustration works for various media such as book covers, magazines, advertisements, packages, t-shirts and other items as well as websites in Japan and overseas.
My future dream was to become an illustrator, which I wrote for the elementary school graduation album. (Mari Katogi)
I wasn't excellent at drawing at all.
But I really loved drawing more than anything, so I joined an illustration club at the elementary school. I had been a member of the art club from the junior high school to the university.
I had spent most of my time drawing, before going to school and after coming back.
I suppose the number of my sketchbooks from that time would amount to several hundreds.
However, my childhood enthusiasm didn't automatically lead me to the path to a professional illustrator. Due to objection from people around me, and also my lack of self-confidence, I didn't choose to go to an art college. Instead, I enrolled myself in a commercial high school and learned economy at a university.
After graduation, I continued my carrier as a planner and salesperson for an advertising company. Eventually, I started feeling frustrated for not being involved in the creative side of work.
"I really want to draw by myself…"
On leaving the job, I started learning illustration at "Setsu Mode Seminar" (one of the most prestigious art colleges in Japan).
Setsu was not the place to learn how to draw from the beginning, but the school gave me an opportunity to meet other students who took drawing very seriously.
For me, it was a very fresh and exciting experience.
I create my illustrations entirely in Adobe Illustrator without any drafts. In fact, I have been drawing on a computer since I was an elementary school student. My current style is something I have developed from there.
For a very long time, I had rather felt embarrassed to present my digital works to people, so I only included my acrylic and gouache paintings in the portfolio.
It is only recently that I started showing my digital illustrations without any hesitation.
My first commercial illustration work, completed entirely in Adobe Illustrator, was for a book cover "Stylish Life of Dr. Koichi Kuwagata", by H. Okuizumi, published in May 2011 by Bungeishunju Publishing House.
When I read the project brief, I felt I really wanted to try out a very complicated layout. So I chose digital method for this work so that I could change compositions very easily as I created the picture.
Now I make most of my commission works using Adobe Illustrator. This method resulted in my winning the award for this competition.
I had never been convinced that my illustration style would easily appeal to most judges. I am certainly very encouraged to be recognized and awarded the first prize.
I like all the media containing illustrations, such as cartoons, animations, and children's picture books --- no matter which genre they may be categorized in.
I especially adore elaborate illustrations by Henry Darger and Yoshitaro Isaka. I am also drawn to feminine beauty illustrated by Cicely Mary Barker, Lisbeth Zwerger, and Junichi Nakahara.

I don't particularly enjoy trips, but I have been to Europe a few times. I really love the atmosphere of Scandinavian and Eastern European culture --- everything about their life styles including objects, furniture, and the towns. They give me some kind of inspirations.
Recently, I made a trip to Finland as I respect Tove Jansson, the creator of Moomin.
Ever since I won the judges award in the vol.7 book cover competition by Gallery House Maya, I have been gradually getting more commission work.
In September 2011, I published a book, which is a collection of my small illustrations of over 2000 pieces: "For Princess" (published by Softbank Creative Publishing House).
I am very grateful of the fact that illustration has now become a major part of my everyday life. I hope that I can make a living on illustration for the years to come.
For the future project, I am interested in illustrating a sequential series so that I can draw regularly. Also, I would like to illustrate successive volumes of the books I have already worked on. I would be very pleased to see a series of books with my illustrations on their covers!
When I accumulate many good works and improve my skills, I would like to publish my illustration book some day.
That is my dream as an illustrator, also as once a child who always wanted to become an illustrator.
